The Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan) district police in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have served a threat advisory notice to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, requesting him to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel.
As per the advisory notice, Maulana Fazl could be targeted along with other party workers and leaders. The notice says this could occur during travel or public rallies and that even his residence could come under a terrorist attack.
Police officials told The Express Tribune that the Maulana had been advised to enhance his security while travelling and to keep law enforcement agencies informed at all times about his movement so that fool-proof security could be provided to him.
Due to the increasing incidents of terrorism in K-P, the provincial government has also directed government officials to avoid unnecessary travel during the Muharram holidays.
According to details, the government has issued a threat alert letter that warns of increased terrorism and targeted attacks on government officials, especially in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu and Lakki Marwat.
The letter states that there has been a continuous increase in terrorist incidents, targeted killings and abductions of government officials in the province and that, therefore, government officials must avoid unnecessary travel during the Muharram holidays to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, in Janni Khel, Bannu, two Frontier Corps (FC) personnel have been killed by unidentified terrorists. Amid the continuously deteriorating law and order situation in Bannu district which has seen a spate of militant attacks, authorities have tried to institute stern measures to put an end to such activity. The armed individuals opened fire on and killed the FC men and then made good their escape.
Police said both personnel had been on leave and that the incident was a clear case of terrorism as neither had a personal feud with anyone. They have been identified as Suleman and Akhtar Ali.
